If you can picture in your mind the portrait of a baseball umpire in a Norman Rockwell painting, that’s Don Hiltz. The quintessential volunteer, Don donned the old umpire gear, complete with the classic chest protector,  to give himself professional air. He was firm, fair, friendly and won everyone’s respect as he called youth baseball games at the Farmington 500 Club field on Summer Street during the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to calling a good game, Don took the opportunity to encourage kids and offer advice.
