Randy doesn’t recall touching a basketball much before the 1970 Farmington teams won the Class M state championship. After that, he noted, it became a passion. Although he excelled in three sports for the Tigers and later at New Hampshire Vocational Technical College in Berlin, basketball was his main love. Tate played varsity three years and all three years Farmington made the playoffs, including his senior year when he averaged 20-plus points. The Tigers lost at the buzzer by a point in the first round. Randy played varsity baseball as an outfielder for three seasons, with his senior year resulting in a rare, at the time, playoff appearance. He batted over .400 as a senior with four homers. Randy attended Berlin Tech for three years, playing all three sports, but making his presence particularly felt in basketball. He scored 1,286 points in 57 career games, earning numerous all-conference and all-tournament awards. He averaged 25 points per game in his final year, netting a career-high 45 points vs. Laconia in his final home game. Randy began coaching and reffing basketball with the Farmington 500 Club when he was 15 and continued on through college and for 20 years after that, including baseball and soccer at different junctures. He owns his own business, Norway Plains Survey Associates. He lives in Wolfeboro with his wife, Kathy. They have two grown sons, Josh and Matt.
