FARMINGTON — The Farmington High School girls basketball team’s full-court press is a work in progress.

Monday night was a big step forward.

The Tigers (4-0) threw their pressure at Pittsfield midway through the first quarter and it provided a much-needed spark. Farmington forced 11 turnovers and scored 16 unanswered points en route to a 47-19 D-IV win — the first for the Tigers in 2018.

The press turned a lackluster 1-0 deficit into a 16-3 advantage after one quarter. The Tigers led 32-7 at the break.

“We’re working on it, but it’s far from perfect,” said Farmington coach Dawn Weeks of her team’s press. “We’re working toward doing it right out of the gate, to put us in a position so we can relax a little. Hopefully by the time we get to the big, big games, we’ve mastered it.”

It was their first game in 10 days since playing three games in three days last month at their own holiday tournament. Last Friday’s game at Wilton-Lyndeborough was postponed due to the severe cold.

Katie Martineau, who hit the 1,000-point mark in her previous game, paced the Farmington attack with a game-high 22 points, 17 in the first half. Freshman Chloe Weeks added seven points and Shannon Kobbe tossed in six. Eight Tiger players scored.

“We knew Pittsfield hasn’t been the best as they’ve been in the past,” Martineau said. “We know we have some big games coming up, so we’re trying to just play our hardest.”

Trailing 1-0 in the first quarter, the Tigers turned up the pressure and Pittsfield coughed up the ball.

Martineau scored seven points during the 16-0 run, while Erryn Ebare added four.

“We jumped and just kept pushing,” Martineau said.

The Tigers led 38-11 after three quarters and actually went 6 minutes, 48 seconds without scoring at one stretch in the second half.

Only three players scored for Pittsfield (1-6), led by Haylee Gilleney with 10 points. Katie Rollins had five and Cora Lemay added four.

“I think we did a good job in the first four minutes sticking with them,” said Pittsfield coach Heidi Hall. “But once they put the full-court press on us, we kind of fell apart. We couldn’t handle the pressure and we couldn’t recover after that. ... They only had it on for three or four minutes. But it kind of took us out of our rhythm.”

The Tigers are one of four unbeaten teams remaining in D-IV. One of them is Colebrook (5-0), the team that knocked Farmington out of last year’s tournament in the quarters. The two meet on Jan. 19 in Farmington.

One key for the Tigers is finding secondary scoring behind Martineau, who has led Farmington in scoring in all seven games, including the ones in the holiday tournament. “We’re really forcing those other players to step up out of their comfort zone and try and make plays,” Weeks said. “It’s slowly coming. Our goal every game is to have five or more scorers and two in double figures. We’re coming close.”

The Tigers host 2-1 Mascenic Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
