FARMINGTON — As a little girl playing youth basketball, Katie Martineau dreamed some day of scoring 1,000 points for the Farmington High School girls team.

Thursday night before a large home crowd that dream became a reality.

The Tiger junior drained a 3-pointer from the left wing 25 seconds into the second quarter to surpass the milestone, just the fourth Farmington girl to do so. She ended the night with a game-high 28 points, but the D-IV Tigers lost to Division III Inter-Lakes, 64-53, in the semifinals of the Mike Lee Holiday Basketball Bash.

“I’ve been wanting this since I was so little,” Martineau said. “It was just so exciting. To see everyone here supporting me was crazy.”

It was Farmington’s second loss in three nights to the Lakers, who also beat them Tuesday, 70-44 — a game that saw the Tigers turn the ball over 38 times.

Martineau needed six points to reach the milestone coming in. She scored two off the opening tip; hit two foul shots at 3:50 of the first quarter, and then found herself open on the left wing for a trey early in the second frame. She hit it to make Farmington history, joining Julie Gagne, Kristy Woodill and Tabby Whitehouse on the girls’ milestone list.

“I came in really nervous, but I just tried not to pay attention to it,” Martineau said. “I just tried to play like I have been the past three years. My team was really supportive, so that helped a lot too. I just tried to ignore it.”

The Tigers, playing before a lively crowd, trailed 30-25 at half, but used a 20-13 burst in the third quarter to go up 45-43 with eight minutes to play.

Martineau hit a trio of 3-pointers in the quarter, while Tatyana Long had six points and Cynthia Langley added all five of her points.

Inter-Lakes took the lead for good early in the fourth, but the Tigers stayed close. Martineau’s three-point play cut the Lakers’ lead to 50-49 with 4:33 to go, and her drive at 3:01 kept it manageable down 56-51.

An 8-1 surge by the quick and scrappy Lakers widened the lead to 64-52 with 1:19 to play put the game away, led by four points from Emma Wheeler, who scored a team-high 17 points. Inter-Lakes had great balance with three players in double figures. Mollie Durand added 12 points, while Julia Gintof tossed in 11. Jessalyn Brown added nine, Taylor Ambrose scored eight and Jordan Durand added seven for good measure.

“I told the girls the gym will be loud and everyone will be pumped up to play,” said Inter-Lakes coach Beth Pion-Burlison. “Just play our game. It was a little tougher because it was louder, but they pulled through.”

Long added nine for Farmington, while Erryn Ebare added eight.

“We played three and a half quarters,” said Farmington coach Dawn Weeks. “We let it slip away a little bit too much in the fourth and didn’t execute the way we needed to execute. They are super quick and anticipate the ball incredibly well. I was pleased with the performance. It was a huge improvement from Tuesday night. We actually played solid defense for the majority of the game.”

The Lakers played a box-and-one on Martineau with Brown shadowing her most of the game. “She gets open when she can and she shoots when she’s open,” Pion-Burlison said. “She’s a good player.”

Inter-Lakes will play in Saturday’s championship, 3 p.m., against Kennett.
