NEWMARKET – Newmarket held Farmington High School star Katie Martineau in check in the first half. The Mules weren’t so fortunate in the second half.

Martineau scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the final 16 minutes to lead the Tigers to a 39-27 Division IV win over the Mules.

Martineau was hardly the only reason Farmington came away with the win.

The Tigers closed out the first half on a high note, shifting momentum their way after Cynthia Langley scored two fast break buckets on consecutive plays with just under a minute remaining in the second quarter. Rather than take a two-point lead into the locker room, Langley’s layups pushed the Farmington lead to 17-11.

“I’m not sure how we pulled it out,” Farmington coach Dawn Weeks said. “But typically we work really hard to try to become a running team, because that’s where our strength is. We’re fast and we strive to accelerate our game as long as we’re breaking. When we’re forced to slow things down we kind of get sloppy. Those little spurts were huge.”

“I don’t know if it was tiredness or just our mental focus for that little bit of time,” Newmarket coach Meghan Averill said. “That was kind of their run and we went into the half and said, ‘OK, that was their run what are we going to do to get our own.’ Not sure if it was lack of focus or just us being tired.”

Farmington (2-0) ended up outscoring Newmarket (1-2) in the third quarter, 15-12, with Martineau logging 10 in the frame. Brenda Bounphakhom (11 points) and Reagan Jordan (9 points) combined to score 10 of the Mules’ 12 but couldn’t chip away any at the Tigers’ lead going into the fourth.

“We know [Martineau’s] their player; she’s their go-to,” Averill said. “She’s very good and you have to respect that. We had multiple people having to step up and try to deny her everywhere. We knew she was going to get her points and we didn’t want to get discouraged in the second half because she’s a good enough player that she’s going to bounce back.”

Martineau continued her march toward 1,000 career points. She now has 912.

“Our defense wasn’t as strong as it usually is but it was a main focus on getting on (Martineau),” Bounphakhom said. “I think a lot of people that were on her got fouls and it was just hard because we sometimes didn’t help [on defense]. We just couldn’t get it tonight.”

Already trailing by nine entering the final quarter, Newmarket didn’t do itself any favors by allowing Langley (6 points) and Shannon Kobbe (6 points) to score on the break on two straight possessions. The Farmington lead grew to 13 and the Mules would only get it back down to 12 before the final buzzer sounded.

Newmarket will host Mascenic on Friday while Farmington is at home against Nute next Wednesday.
