Marc is a 1988 Farmington High School grad who played three varsity sports, but excelled in basketball. He was pivotal in leading the Tigers to the 1987-88 Class M championship as the team’s starting center. He averaged 14.7 points per game and seven seven rebounds per game for a team that went 24-1 overall and beat previously undefeated Mascoma in the final, 78-70.. A three-year varsity player, Marc ended his career with 694 points. He was named Class M All-State First Team as a senior, while earning all-tournament honors at Farmington’s annual Christmas tournament. He also received the team’s Coach’s Award. “Inch for inch at 6-1, Marc often matched up against players much taller than him,” recalled coach Mike Lee. “His heart, determination, leadership and hustle were seldom matched by his competition. A true winner by definition. Tougher than tough. Hated to lose. He grew into an excellent high school player. Can only imagine him at 6-4!” His dad, the late Sonny Varney was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014. Marc lives in Farmington with his wife, Nora. They have two sons, Mike and Kevin.
